Southend United boss explains absence of key man against Boston

Southend United striker Josh Walker missed tonight’s 2-0 victory over Boston United due to a hamstring injury. Walker, who had started the first two games of the season, sustained the issue towards the end of Monday’s training session.

Blues manager Kevin Maher is uncertain about the severity of the injury. “He only felt something at the end of training yesterday, so we’ll need to see how it settles,” Maher said. “We’ll assess the damage and hope it’s not too serious.”

Walker’s spot in the attack was taken by Danny Waldron, who made his first start of the season. Maher was pleased with Waldron’s performance. “He worked the channels well and had a chance that he couldn’t quite convert,” Maher noted. “Overall, it was really encouraging.”

Maher is also actively searching for another striker. “Signing players is easy, but signing the right ones is crucial,” he said. “We’re actively looking, though I’m not sure if it will be before Saturday.”

Southend United manager Kevin Maher was pleased to give George Moncur his debut for the Shrimpers in the match against Boston United. The on-loan Leyton Orient midfielder came on for Noor Husin and played the final 19 minutes of the game.

Maher expressed his satisfaction with getting the 31-year-old involved right away, highlighting the significance of his debut.

“It was great to get him on the pitch, and you can already see the quality he brings,” Maher said. “He’s excellent on the ball and has a way of making others want to play alongside him. I’m glad he had the opportunity to play.

“I might have made other changes earlier, but with the score at 2-0, you have to be cautious.”
