Darren Sarll remains tight-lipped amid rumours linking Pools with experienced striker

Hartlepool United manager Darren Sarll has not ruled out the possibility of signing experienced striker Gary Madine. The 33-year-old has been linked with a move to Pools over the past week, as the club searches for a new frontman.

Sarll has expressed his intent to strengthen his forward line, with providing cover and competition for Mani Dieseruvwe being a top priority. Madine appears to be a strong candidate; born in Gateshead, he would add a local touch to the squad, and at six foot three, he shares Dieseruvwe’s imposing physical presence. Additionally, Madine brings a wealth of experience to the table, making him an appealing option for the club.

After spending time in Middlesbrough’s academy, Gary Madine signed with Carlisle United, where he scored 22 goals in 85 appearances. His career saw him find the net at clubs like Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton, though he struggled during his spell at Cardiff, failing to score in 28 matches. More recently, Madine has been without a club for over a year following his departure from Blackpool, where he tallied 23 goals in 101 games.

Fleetwood Town and National League rivals York City are also rumored to be interested in signing the veteran striker. However, when asked about a potential deal for Madine, Hartlepool United manager Darren Sarll was cautious about revealing specifics.

“I can talk about good players, and I’d like more of them,” Sarll told BBC Radio Tees Sport. “Gary Madine is a very, very good player, there’s absolutely no doubt about that.

“We want good players. I’ve starved our supporters—no one else at the football club has starved our supporters more than Darren Sarll. I’m very particular about what I think we need and want. I’m learning all the time where the gaps are. I don’t want to make early decisions that could disrupt our future.

“We’re still assessing what we need, but it’s clear we definitely need another centre-forward. Mani Dieseruvwe is in the best shape of his life; he looks like a completely different beast, credit to his professionalism and character. But he will need support at some point. We’re about to go through a tough run of games like Wealdstone-Woking and Southend-Tamworth.

“While we’re fortunate to have players like Joe Grey and Luke Charman who can play centrally, we still want more good players. What we don’t want to do is make decisions that dilute what we’re trying to achieve.”
