A memorial is growing outside the home of a Belleville woman and her young daughter after a car crashed through their living room, killing them both.

The victims have been identified as 35-year-old Shavonne Green and her 4-year-old daughter, Torianna Bohanna.

On Monday evening, family and friends gathered outside the home for a balloon release in their memory. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning in the 100 block of S. 8th Street.

According to Belleville Police, Matthew Thomas intentionally drove his car into the front of the house, causing a major fire. Responding officers arrived to find the home engulfed in flames and filled with heavy smoke.

Thomas, who had reportedly caused problems at the home before and was said to have a mental illness, was the subject of a manhunt for several hours on Sunday. He was believed to be wielding a machete near railroad tracks by S. 29th Street when police released his name and photo, considering him a danger to the public. Thomas was later taken into custody but has not yet been charged.

Maurice Green, Shavonne’s father, expressed his heartbreak over the loss of his daughter and granddaughter, saying, “There’s a hole in our life. How do you get by? How do you smile? How do you breathe? I’m at work to keep moving, to be strong. I sympathize and empathize with any parent who has to bury their children or bury a child, let alone a child and a grandchild.”

He shared that Shavonne and Torianna were watching television together in the living room when Thomas crashed into the house, trapping and killing them beneath the car. “They were beautiful people, personality-wise. My daughter was intelligent. I was proud to be her father. My grandchild was a bundle of joy. They had a very close bond,” Green said.

Fortunately, first responders were able to rescue Shavonne’s 10-year-old son, DJ, safely from the house. Lt. Col. Mark Heffernan, Belleville Police’s assistant chief, said the young boy was taken to the hospital and has since been released to family.
