Opinion: Danny Rohl should swoop for excellent free-agent if Sheffield Wednesday can’t sign Ike Ugbo

Sheffield Wednesday have received a boost in their pursuit of Ike Ugbo.

The Owls are keen to bring the striker back to the club after he netted seven goals while on loan last season. However, their initial bid was rejected by Troyes, and the effort to re-sign him has been challenging due to financial constraints and significant interest from other clubs.

Yesterday, it was reported that Ugbo is very interested in returning to Yorkshire. If Wednesday can meet his valuation, they are likely to win the race. Troyes might demand more than the £2.5m they paid for him two years ago, raising doubts about whether the Owls can afford such a fee.

Danny Rohl will want to avoid a prolonged saga as the transfer window closes and may need to consider alternative options if they cannot secure Ugbo. Fortunately, Wednesday may not need to spend large sums to find a goalscorer, as there are still quality players available on free transfers.

Sheffield Wednesday should swoop in for ex-Stoke City striker

Tyrese Campbell became a free agent after being released by Stoke City at the end of the season, with his bad luck with injuries playing a significant role in his departure.

The ‘excellent’ 24-year-old had been a standout at the bet365 Stadium, contributing 15 goal involvements during the 2022/23 season and finishing as the joint top scorer. In total, Campbell has 36 goals and 21 assists in 164 games for the Potters, but his career has been frequently disrupted by injuries.

He spent almost a year sidelined with a knee problem during the 2020/21 campaign and managed only 14 starts last season due to a hip injury. However, Campbell appeared to regain full fitness towards the end of the season, scoring in consecutive games against Southampton and Bristol City.

Despite his late-season form, it wasn’t enough to secure a new contract, and he now finds himself without a club.

Tyrese Campbell’s talent could overshadow his injury record

Tyrese Campbell is clearly a huge talent, and The Athletic previously reported that he had attracted interest from Premier League clubs such as Everton.

Given his difficult 2023-24 campaign, it’s unlikely that top-flight clubs will pursue him now, which could leave Sheffield Wednesday free to swoop in for him.

Recovering from long-term injuries is always challenging, but when a player has demonstrated significant quality, they can sometimes be worth the risk. Campbell has the potential to add goals to the Owls’ squad, and if the move doesn’t pan out, it wouldn’t be a significant loss since they wouldn’t have spent anything on his transfer.
