Former Hartlepool United stalwart signs for Northampton Town

Former Hartlepool United defender Jack Baldwin has joined League One side Northampton Town. Baldwin, 31, started his career at Victoria Park, making 85 appearances and earning recognition for his footballing intelligence, maturity, and skill on the ball. His development led to a £500,000 move to Peterborough on transfer deadline day in January 2014.

Despite facing several injuries during his time with Peterborough, Baldwin accumulated 100 league appearances and was named captain before the 2017/18 season. He then had spells at Sunderland, Salford, and Bristol Rovers before heading to Scotland to sign with Premiership side Ross County.

At Ross County, Baldwin enjoyed a successful tenure, making 102 appearances in all competitions and being appointed captain for the 2023/24 campaign, helping secure the team’s top-flight status.

Baldwin played 85 times for Pools and commanded a £500,000 fee from Peterborough.

Once described by legendary former Pools boss Neale Cooper as a “young Alan Hansen,” Baldwin becomes Northampton’s fifth summer signing. Cobblers boss Jon Brady praised Baldwin as a “real leader” as he aims to improve on last season’s 10th-place finish.

“Jack is a real leader, an organiser, and someone we are delighted to welcome to the club,” Brady told Northampton’s official website. “He is a brave defender, someone who wins his fair share of tackles and blocks, but he can play too. He is a good age, with a good pedigree and a lot of experience, playing at various levels in England and Scotland. Jack will come in and be part of a good group of central defenders in the squad, and we are very pleased to welcome him to Sixfields.”

Baldwin has signed a two-year deal with the club.
