National League side Yeovil Town have signed Matt Gould from fellow National League team Altrincham on a permanent basis.
The 30-year-old goalkeeper has agreed to a two-year deal, despite having signed a one-year extension with Altrincham just a few months earlier.
Gould began his career in New Zealand in 2012, playing for Hawkes Bay Utd until 2014.
He then moved to England, signing with Cheltenham Town, but stayed for only one season before transferring to Livingston in Scotland.
His time in Scotland was brief, as he returned to England to join Stourbridge in the same season, where he remained until 2017 before moving north to Spennymoor Town.
Gould made 78 appearances for Spennymoor over two seasons, leading to a move to Altrincham in the National League in 2021.
During his four years with Altrincham, he also had loan spells at Nantwich, Ashton, and Chorley before departing this summer to join Mark Cooper’s Yeovil.
Last Seasons Numbers
Last season, Gould was primarily the second-choice goalkeeper behind Ethan Ross for Altrincham, but he still managed to make 10 appearances across all competitions.
During those games, he averaged an impressive three saves per match and kept three clean sheets. His ball distribution was also notable, boasting an 85% pass success rate, including a 56% success rate for long balls.
These stats demonstrate that Gould is not only a capable shot-stopper but also skilled with the ball at his feet.
Where Does Gould Fit At Yeovil?
With the addition of Ollie Wright on loan from Southampton, Gould could provide strong competition for the first-choice goalkeeper spot.
His experience will be valuable to Mark Cooper’s newly promoted side, which is often crucial for maintaining their position in the division.
While the move may surprise Altrincham fans, it is a prudent decision by Yeovil.
