Illinois is bolstering its wide receiver room with more veteran experience, as Illinois State graduate transfer Eddie Kasper has signed with the Fighting Illini.
The Wheaton Academy product recorded 1,198 receiving yards over four seasons with the Redbirds. According to Illini Inquirer, Kasper signed after an official visit to campus earlier this month and will join the team this summer.
The 5-foot-10, 160-pound senior appeared in 41 games at Illinois State, totaling 137 receptions for 1,198 yards and three touchdowns. During the 2024 season, he contributed 36 catches for 322 yards and a score, helping the Redbirds reach the FCS championship game.
Kasper has deep family ties to the Illinois program. His father, Ed, attended the university, while his uncle, Kevin Kasper, was a standout receiver at Iowa before an eight-year NFL career that included a Super Bowl XXXIX title with the New England Patriots. His cousin, Kyler Kasper, currently plays wide receiver at Oregon.
Reflecting on his journey, Kasper told 247Sports’ Brian Dohn: “It’s kind of crazy coming from where I came from football-wise. I never thought I’d be in this situation. I get to play for coach (Bret) Bielema and it’s the right thing for me for now, for the team, for my future as a player and a coach. It’s still not real.”
Why it matters: Kasper becomes the fourth graduate transfer wide receiver to join Illinois this offseason, adding significant experience to a position group that has seen considerable turnover. The Illini lost several receivers, including Hank Beatty (graduation), Justin Bowick (Oklahoma State), Malik Elzy (LSU), and others to the transfer portal.
Returning starters Hudson Clement and Collin Dixon are poised for larger roles, but the coaching staff has prioritized adding proven playmakers around ECU transfer quarterback Katin Houser. Recent additions include FIU’s Alex Perry, FAU’s Jayshon Platt, and Ball State’s Ty Robinson.
While Kasper may not be expected to be a primary target, he provides valuable depth in the slot as a reliable underneath option. His arrival, along with the other veteran transfers, could allow Illinois to develop its six freshmen receivers—including redshirt freshman Brayden Trimble and four-star recruit Nasir Rankin—at a more measured pace.
