“James Cook is proving every week why we believed in him enough to extend him,” Coach Sean McDermott said. “That four-year, $48 million deal came with expectations, and he’s meeting them head-on. From the way he prepares to how he competes on Sundays, James has set the tone for this team.”
McDermott pointed out Cook’s consistency, highlighting that he’s surpassed 100 total yards and scored a touchdown in every game this season. “That’s the kind of reliability you want from a player you’re building around,” he explained. “He’s given us a spark in both the run and pass game, and defenses have to account for him at all times.”
Through four games, Cook has already piled up 490 total yards and five touchdowns, production that has put him among the most impactful backs in the league. “Those numbers aren’t by accident,” McDermott said. “It’s a result of his work ethic, his vision, and his ability to make plays in critical moments.”
The coach also emphasized how Cook’s growth has helped balance the offense. “Josh [Allen] will always be central to what we do, but having James producing at this level makes us much tougher to defend,” McDermott noted. “He opens things up for everyone else and takes pressure off our quarterback.”
With the Bills standing as the AFC’s only undefeated team, McDermott gave Cook his flowers. “At 4–0, we’re proud of how the whole group is performing, but James has been a huge piece of that. He’s showing why he belongs in the conversation as one of the top backs in this league, and I couldn’t be more proud of the way he’s playing.”
