The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb to a major league contract and added him to the active roster. To make room, left-hander Jayvien Sandridge has been optioned to Triple-A.
Hartlieb, 31, originally joined the Yankees on a minor league deal this offseason. He recently made a single appearance for the team against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks in one inning. After that outing, he was designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and elected free agency. He now returns on a new MLB deal.
Hartlieb has pitched in parts of five MLB seasons with multiple teams. He debuted with the Pirates in 2019, where he struggled, but posted a solid 3.63 ERA during the 2020 shortened season. Since then, his big-league appearances have been limited, and he holds a 8.59 ERA across his last 22 innings between 2021 and 2024 with the Pirates, Mets, Marlins, and Rockies.
With the Yankees facing major injuries in their rotation — including Clarke Schmidt undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Ryan Yarbrough all sidelined — Hartlieb provides depth as a long relief option. The team may rely on bullpen games or give right-hander Allan Winans a rotation spot unless a more permanent solution is found.
As for Sandridge, he made his MLB debut recently but allowed two runs in less than an inning. He will now return to Triple-A as a left-handed depth option.
