Buffalo Bills running back James Cook is still without the contract extension he has wanted for months. Despite the team re-signing several important players recently, Cook’s reported ask for a $15 million average annual salary hasn’t been addressed yet. He took part in the mandatory minicamp and confirmed he will attend training camp, though the exact role he will play remains uncertain.
The Bills currently have very little salary cap space—just over $100,000—which makes it unlikely that Cook will get a new deal this offseason. However, there is still the possibility that an extension could happen next year. By then, though, Buffalo won’t be the only team interested in signing him, and Cook could see offers from multiple franchises.
Looking toward the 2025 season, the question becomes: what kind of performance will Cook need to justify a contract worth roughly $15 million per year? According to ESPN analyst Mike Clay, Cook is projected to rush for 1,228 yards and score 12 rushing touchdowns. Additionally, he could contribute about 284 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns through the air.
If Cook achieves these numbers, it would mark his third consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season and his second straight year with 10 or more rushing touchdowns. Such a strong performance would likely earn him a third consecutive Pro Bowl selection and firmly establish him as one of the league’s top running backs.
While many believe Cook deserves a new contract this offseason, it appears more likely that he will have to prove himself during the 2025 season first. Should he meet or exceed the projections, multiple teams—including Buffalo—are expected to compete for his services, potentially driving up his value significantly in free agency.
