The New York Mets and Yankees, two of baseball’s highest payroll teams, have struggled throughout June, falling short of their expected performance levels for the 2025 season. The Mets recently suffered a heavy series loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates, allowing 30 runs over three games while scoring just four. This poor stretch has seen the Mets lose 13 of their last 16 games, prompting a players-only meeting that so far has not changed their fortunes. Their slump also cost them first place in the National League East, which has been taken over by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor acknowledged the team’s frustration but emphasized the importance of unity and perseverance to overcome the tough period. Mets owner Steve Cohen expressed surprise and disappointment at the slump, calling for patience and faith as the team works through the difficulties.
Despite the team’s struggles, outfielder Juan Soto has bounced back impressively after a slow start to the season. Soto has hit .317 with 12 home runs over his last 30 games, becoming a strong contender for National League Player of the Month. His steady approach has earned praise from teammates for maintaining consistency regardless of the team’s ups and downs.
Meanwhile, the Yankees managed a series win over the Oakland Athletics, highlighted by two home runs from Aaron Judge. However, their overall June record stands at 13–13, including a six-game losing streak earlier in the month. This pattern of fluctuating performance has been typical for the Yankees in recent seasons under manager Aaron Boone. The Yankees hold the third-highest payroll in the league at $310 million.
Both New York teams continue to face challenges as they strive to meet their high expectations for the season. Despite financial resources and talent, June has been a difficult month, leaving questions about how they will adjust moving forward.
