The Detroit Pistons have added one of the NCAA’s top shooters to their roster. In the 2025 NBA Draft, they picked former Tennessee Volunteers standout Chaz Lanier with the 37th overall selection, continuing their focus on acquiring players who can stretch the floor. Lanier will need to prove himself in the upcoming summer league this July to secure a spot on the team.
Alongside Lanier, Detroit has signed undrafted sharpshooter Brice Williams from Nebraska, who was one of the leading scorers in the competitive Big Ten conference last season. Williams, who recently inked a deal with the Pistons, aims to earn a place on the roster for the 2025-26 season. Known for his scoring ability, Williams was a First-Team All-Big Ten player, averaging 20.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 38.5% from beyond the arc.
With both Lanier and Williams expected to play in the summer league, Detroit is likely to have a potent scoring threat on the wing. Averaging over 20 points per game in a strong conference like the Big Ten is no small feat, suggesting Williams could be a valuable addition if he replicates that production at the pro level.
If Williams can impress the Pistons’ coaching staff and front office with his shooting and overall game, he could emerge as a surprising candidate to secure a spot on the team. However, Detroit still faces uncertainty regarding its perimeter rotation, with several veterans like Tim Hardaway Jr., Malik Beasley, and Dennis Schröder entering free agency.
This situation opens the door for Williams to make a real impact during the summer league and potentially earn playing time next season if he performs to expectations. The upcoming weeks will be crucial for him to demonstrate his value to the Pistons.
