Boise State University has appointed alumnus Erik Lindgren as the new head coach of its Spirit Squad, which includes the cheer, dance, and mascot programs.
Lindgren, a former Bronco himself, previously served as a graduate assistant while earning his Master’s in Sports Leadership at Boise State. He most recently worked at the University of Colorado as the Assistant Director of the Spirit Squad.
“Erik played a big part in enhancing our game day experience,” said Josh Bender, Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing & Promotions. “We’re excited to welcome him back.”
Boise State’s Spirit Squad—made up of over 60 members, including cheerleaders, the Mane Line dance team, and mascot Buster Bronco—actively supports the university’s athletic teams at more than 80 games annually and attends over 100 community events each year. These events range from celebrations to promotional appearances, helping build school spirit and engage with fans.
“I’m honored to lead a group that serves as ambassadors for the university,” said Lindgren. “We’re committed to making a lasting impact on the game day atmosphere and fan experience.”
As one of the university’s few year-round programs, the Spirit Squad also competes nationally. They participate in the UCA College Cheerleading Championships in Orlando and the NDA College Dance Championships in Daytona Beach. Since 1993, Boise State’s Spirit Squad has won ten national titles.
In 2025, the Mane Line dance team captured national titles in both jazz and hip hop at the NDA Championships, winning in Division 1A—the program’s highest achievement to date.
Lindgren holds cheer coaching certifications from both the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators (AACCA) and USA Cheer and Dance.
