Choosing the player of the week is usually tough on a strong team like the Cardinals, but this time Alec Burleson stood out clearly above the rest, even over Nolan Arenado and Lars Nootbaar, who also had solid performances.
Despite continuing his odd streak of going 0-for-4 on Sundays, Burleson’s overall performance from Monday through Saturday was outstanding. During that period, he hit .455 with three home runs and nine RBIs. His on-base percentage was .458, slugging .909, and his weighted runs created plus (wRC+) was 270—an indicator of elite offensive production.
Burleson showed power and consistency, highlighted by three home runs in different game situations: one in a blowout, another that sparked a comeback, and a two-run homer early in a game. He also reached a personal milestone, recording his 300th career hit with a double on Friday.
He played a key role in the Cardinals’ comeback win on Saturday, hitting a crucial single in the 8th inning that set up the eventual game-winning rally.
On defense, Burleson impressed with a diving stop and some stylish plays at first base, showing he’s reliable on both sides of the game.
