Yankees Could Bring Back $15 Million Gold Glove Infielder in Trade Deal
The New York Yankees currently hold a lead in the AL East, despite a recent slump, and are expected to make moves before the trade deadline to strengthen their roster.
While a major trade seems unlikely, one insider suggests the team might reacquire a reliable infielder who offers both defensive versatility and some offensive power.
In a recent mailbag, SNY reporter Andy Martino highlighted the Yankees’ need for a right-handed bat, likely an infielder, with former Yankee Isiah Kiner-Falefa being a strong candidate.
Kiner-Falefa began his career with the Texas Rangers and spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Yankees, where he played mostly infield and some outfield. He is currently in the final year of a two-year, $15 million contract signed with the Toronto Blue Jays before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Pirates rebuilding, he is expected to be available at the trade deadline.
Former Mets GM Zach Scott also sees Kiner-Falefa as a good fit for the Yankees, noting his versatility and right-handed hitting as valuable additions.
Other possible targets include Colorado Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon, who is hitting .225 with 11 homers and 24 RBIs this season. Acquiring McMahon could allow the Yankees to move Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base, adding more flexibility to their infield.
Martino mentioned the Yankees might also seek pitching reinforcements but remain confident with the return of Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, and soon-to-return AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, who is recovering from a back injury.
