Jazz Chisholm Jr. Ends Yankees’ Scoring Drought with Key Homer
The New York Yankees snapped their 30-inning scoreless streak Wednesday night thanks to Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s second-inning home run against the Los Angeles Angels. Trailing 1-0, Chisholm drove a 2-0 pitch into the right-field seats, marking his 10th homer of the season and sparking a dugout celebration.
The Yankees had not scored since Anthony Volpe’s RBI groundout in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 4-3 loss to Boston. This drought ranked as the seventh-longest in franchise history, still well short of the team record of 37 innings set in 1908. New York had been shut out in three straight games for only the third time in the last 50 years.
Despite their recent offensive struggles, the Yankees entered Wednesday’s game leading the American League in several key categories. They boasted a +98 run differential along with league highs in home runs (109) and runs scored (373). The team’s five-run output over their previous six games marked their worst such stretch since August 1968.
The Angels’ Jack Konchanowicz surrendered the decisive homer to Chisholm, who kept his shot just inside the foul pole. The blast ended a frustrating stretch for a Yankees lineup that had mustered just five runs total during their five-game losing streak prior to Wednesday’s contest.
Major League Baseball’s all-time scoreless streak record remains 48 innings, shared by the 1968 Chicago Cubs and 1906 Philadelphia Athletics. The Yankees will look to build on Chisholm’s momentum as they attempt to climb back atop the AL East standings.
