Trea Turner launched a leadoff home run and added two singles as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Monday night, extending their winning streak to five games. Turner’s early homer set the tone for the Phillies in the first game of the four-game series.
Max Kepler also hit a solo home run that broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning. Alec Bohm contributed two hits and drove in two runs, helping the Phillies pull away late. Rookie pitcher Mick Abel delivered a strong performance, pitching five innings and allowing only one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Miami starter Sandy Alcántara gave up two runs and five hits over five innings while striking out five batters. Despite the loss, Alcántara moved into second place on the Marlins’ all-time strikeout list with 834. The Marlins tried to rally late, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by Agustín Ramírez in the eighth inning.
Philadelphia sealed the win with two runs in the ninth inning, thanks to a clutch two-run single by Bohm. Defensively, Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott made a key diving catch to end the second inning with the bases loaded, helping preserve the lead.
The Phillies have been particularly strong early in games this season, scoring 56 runs in the first inning, second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The teams will continue the series Tuesday with left-hander Jesús Luzardo starting for the Phillies and right-hander Cal Quantrill pitching for the Marlins.
