Evan Engram Aims to Reclaim ‘Joker’ Role with Denver Broncos
As the Denver Broncos head into the offseason, their primary focus has been finding a versatile playmaker, often referred to as a ‘joker’ in Head Coach Sean Payton’s offense. This role typically goes to a tight end or running back who can create mismatches, similar to players like Jimmy Graham or Alvin Kamara during Payton’s tenure with the Saints.
After a disappointing 2024 season where Greg Dulcich underperformed and was eventually waived, the Broncos sought to strengthen their tight end position. They made a significant move by signing veteran tight end Evan Engram to a two-year contract worth up to $23 million, including $16.5 million guaranteed.
Engram chose Denver over division rival Los Angeles Chargers, citing the strong team culture, coaching staff, and quarterback as key reasons for his decision. “Denver was the first team to call when I was released. After talking with the team and feeling the energy in the building, I knew this was the right fit,” Engram said.
Despite a down year in 2024 caused by injuries, including a hamstring strain and torn labrum, Engram has a history of high-level production. In 2023, he posted career-best numbers with the Jacksonville Jaguars, earning a Pro Bowl nod by catching 114 passes for 963 yards and four touchdowns.
Engram acknowledges that earning the ‘joker’ title won’t come overnight. He plans to prove himself through hard work and learning the offense to gain the trust of the coaching staff and teammates. If he can return to his Pro Bowl form, the Broncos’ offense could become one of the league’s best in 2025.
