Steelers Unlikely to Trade for Jonnu Smith, But Their Interest Is Still Telling
Although it’s unlikely the Pittsburgh Steelers will trade for tight end Jonnu Smith, their recent interest in him is still notable. Thisrenewed attention, which emerged after tight end Donald Parham Jr.’s injury, suggests that the Steelers may still be seeking depth at the position. Last season, the team carried four tight ends but didn’t re-sign MyCole Pruitt. Parham was a potential replacement on the fringe of the roster, so his absence leaves a gap that needs to be addressed.
Trading for Smith wouldn’t directly replace Parham, but the mere discussion around the veteran tight end indicates that Pittsburgh is exploring options. One reason for the connection is offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who has a long-standing relationship with Jonnu Smith. The two worked together in Tennessee, where Arthur was first Jonnu’s position coach and later his offensive coordinator. He also brought Smith to Atlanta when he became head coach and did the same with MyCole Pruitt—so the pattern is there.
Despite the trade now appearing unlikely, the underlying interest remains significant. Right now, the Steelers have three tight ends with clear roster spots: Pat Freiermuth, Darnell Washington, and Connor Heyward. While Freiermuth and Washington are well-regarded, Heyward’s role is less defined under Arthur Smith. Known more for his versatility than as a traditional tight end, Heyward’s standing on the depth chart may be uncertain.
Beyond those three, Pittsburgh has only added undrafted rookie JJ Galbreath. Though he’s considered a promising project, he’s still far from the impact player Jonnu Smith could be. The loss of Parham means the Steelers are likely to bring in another body—four tight ends are typically needed just to run effective training camp drills.
Even if Jonnu Smith isn’t the final answer, the Steelers could still make a move. Options include veteran free agents like Marcedes Lewis, who, despite being 41, remains physically imposing, or Gerald Everett, released by the Bears earlier this year. There’s also the possibility of bringing back MyCole Pruitt. Regardless of who they add, it’s clear the Steelers still see the tight end position as an area that needs reinforcement.
