Tough Week for the Phillies: Harper Injured, Nola Delayed Again, Johnson Sent Down
The Philadelphia Phillies are navigating a rough stretch, both on the field and with key players’ health.
After being swept by the Brewers last weekend, the Phillies briefly bounced back with an 8-3 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Strong starts from Cristopher Sánchez and rookie Mick Abel offered promise, but closer Jordan Romano gave up game-ending hits in back-to-back outings, including a walk-off loss in a 5-4 defeat against the Pirates on Friday. That marked the team’s seventh loss in eight games.
Bryce Harper Day-to-Day with Wrist Issue
The biggest concern Friday was Bryce Harper being left out of the lineup due to a sore right wrist. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Harper has been managing the issue for a while, but it worsened on Friday. Harper had just returned earlier in the week after missing time from being hit by a pitch above the elbow on May 27.
Although he homered in his first game back, he went 1-for-11 with five strikeouts over the three-game series in Toronto. Manager Rob Thomson confirmed Harper’s wrist had been bothering him, but no timeline for return has been set. This is a concerning development, especially given Harper’s recent hot streak, during which he posted a .319/.407/.536 line since May 10.
Aaron Nola’s Recovery Delayed Again
Aaron Nola’s return from the injured list is taking longer than expected. Originally diagnosed with a right ankle sprain on May 16, Nola’s recovery has been hampered by a recent side stiffness issue that delayed his scheduled live batting practice. Manager Rob Thomson described it as “very mild,” but it’s another setback. Nola will still need a rehab stint in the minors before rejoining the Phillies’ rotation.
Seth Johnson Sent to Triple-A After Promising Debut
Prospect Seth Johnson, who was called up on June 1, was sent back to Triple-A after a solid performance against Toronto. He pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits. Manager Rob Thomson praised Johnson’s velocity and pitch movement. However, the move was based on roster needs, and Johnson isn’t eligible to return for at least 15 days, making June 21 the earliest possible date.
Meanwhile, Alan Rangel, who was recalled in Johnson’s place, pitched three innings in his MLB debut on Friday, allowing a two-run homer but otherwise showing potential.
