Steelers Consider Trading for Kirk Cousins Amid Uncertainty at Quarterback
The Pittsburgh Steelers remain one of the few NFL teams still actively searching for a quarterback this offseason. Although Aaron Rodgers is seen as their top option, he has yet to make a firm commitment to the team with training camp fast approaching.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers, ESPN’s Ben Solak has suggested an alternative solution: a trade with the Atlanta Falcons for veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. The proposed deal involves the Steelers sending a Day 3 draft pick—specifically a conditional sixth-rounder, which could become a fifth-round pick depending on Cousins’ performance and playing time.
The Steelers’ quarterback depth is thin, with Mason Rudolph currently the projected starter. If Rodgers doesn’t join the team, Pittsburgh would likely need to acquire a proven veteran, and Cousins could be a strong fit.
Cousins, now 37, fits well within the offensive system run by Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, which doesn’t require a highly mobile quarterback. The Falcons might also be willing to cover a significant portion of Cousins’ remaining salary—up to $20 million or more—to facilitate the trade.
Cousins is owed $27.5 million in 2025 as part of a $180 million contract that included $100 million guaranteed. Last season, he had a 7-7 record as a starter for the Falcons before being replaced by rookie Michael Penix Jr.
If the Steelers’ pursuit of Aaron Rodgers ultimately falls through, Cousins presents a realistic and experienced alternative under center.
