With less than 100 days until the 2025 NFL season begins, the Buffalo Bills have yet to agree on a contract extension with running back James Cook. Despite his strong performance over the last two seasons, Cook is still seeking a lucrative multi-year deal, but the team has not made any moves toward an agreement. As the primary running back alongside star quarterback Josh Allen, Cook plays a key role in Buffalo’s offense, and his rapport with Allen has been crucial to their success.
Analyst Nick Shook of NFL.com described 2025 as a crucial, make-or-break year for Cook. Shook pointed out that Cook’s decision to skip voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) reflects the ongoing contract uncertainty. Although Cook posted impressive stats last season—including nearly 1,000 rushing yards, a league-high 16 rushing touchdowns, and two receiving touchdowns—Buffalo appears hesitant to meet his contract demands.
Cook’s total of 18 touchdowns last year was second only to Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs, underlining why Cook believes he deserves a top-tier contract among NFL running backs. However, Shook suggests that to fully earn a new deal, Cook may need to exceed his recent production, aiming for over 1,200 rushing yards, double-digit rushing touchdowns, and significant receiving yards and scores.
Some may question Cook’s elite status due to his lower number of carries compared to backs like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. Still, his efficiency and touchdown totals keep him among the league’s most impactful running backs. Cook’s chemistry with Josh Allen, especially in critical game situations, enhances the Bills’ offensive threat, making him an indispensable part of their game plan.
If the Bills and Cook reach an agreement soon, he will likely remain the focal point of Buffalo’s rushing offense in 2025. If no deal is reached before the season, tensions could rise, and the Bills might rely more heavily on backups Ray Davis and Ty Johnson, with Davis taking early-down duties and Johnson specializing in passing situations. This contract situation could significantly influence Buffalo’s offensive performance next season if it remains unresolved in the coming weeks.
