Lions Injury Updates: Amon-Ra St. Brown Recovering from Surgery, Malcolm Rodriguez Out to Start Season
The Detroit Lions provided two significant injury updates on Thursday.
Star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown revealed he had knee surgery shortly after the 2024 season. While he will sit out the team’s spring activities, the 25-year-old expects to be fully cleared in time for training camp. St. Brown has been a cornerstone of the Lions’ offense, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last three seasons and earning Pro Bowl honors every year. He remains Detroit’s top receiver heading into 2025 and is critical to their offensive success.
Last offseason, St. Brown signed a four-year contract extension worth over $120 million, making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the NFL. He will again be a key part of an offense that features quarterback Jared Goff, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, wideout Jameson Williams, and tight end Sam LaPorta.
Meanwhile, head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez will miss the start of the 2025 season due to the ACL tear he suffered on Thanksgiving. A possible return could come in November. Rodriguez, 26, has started 24 games for the Lions and is entering a contract year, so his performance after recovery could play a big role in determining his future.
Detroit’s current linebacker group includes Jack Campbell and Derrick Barnes, with veteran Alex Anzalone also under contract, though he’s been absent from voluntary workouts. Recently signed linebacker Zach Cunningham may benefit from Rodriguez’s absence, improving his chances of making the final roster after training camp.
