Why the Cardinals Might Still Trade Nolan Arenado Despite Their Recent Success
Although the St. Louis Cardinals have been playing strong baseball lately, there remains a possibility that they could trade veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado. Despite being under contract for several more seasons, Arenado has shown signs of decline as he moves through his mid-30s, and his current performance — including a .228 batting average — raises questions about his long-term value to the team.
The main reason behind a potential trade would be financial. If a favorable offer comes along, the Cardinals may see an opportunity to shed salary and invest in younger talent. The organization is currently evaluating possible long-term extensions for several rising players, including Brendan Donovan, Ivan Herrera, Matthew Liberatore, Victor Scott II, and Masyn Winn. While some, like Donovan and Herrera, are showing strong early value, others may still need more time to prove themselves. Still, their development makes a future without Arenado more feasible.
Arenado, like former teammate Paul Goldschmidt, has had an impressive career but still lacks a World Series title. Given the Cardinals’ position as postseason contenders, trading Arenado would only make sense under the right circumstances — such as a contending American League team losing its starting third baseman. Trading him within the National League seems less likely due to competitive concerns.
Although Arenado may still have productive years ahead, the Cardinals may no longer view his contract as sustainable. Moving on from him could be a controversial but practical step if it allows the team to prioritize younger players and manage payroll more efficiently.
In short, while a trade is not imminent, it remains a realistic possibility if it helps the organization prepare for the future.
