The St. Louis Cardinals have recently promoted promising outfield prospect Travis Honeyman to High-A Peoria following a standout performance in Low-A Palm Beach. This move reflects the organization’s confidence in his development and readiness for a higher level of competition. Honeyman’s impressive start this season demonstrated that he is ready to face tougher pitching and more challenging game situations.
Drafted in the third round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Honeyman quickly established himself as a strong hitter. Over 29 games with Palm Beach, he slashed .321/.446/.443, showing a blend of contact, patience, and some power. His stats included multiple extra-base hits, stolen bases, and an impressive number of walks, all of which underline his well-rounded offensive skill set. Given his age, he had been performing against younger competition, so this promotion aims to test his abilities further.
Last season, Honeyman’s progress was slowed by shoulder injuries that required surgery, limiting him to just 20 games. Despite the setbacks, he still managed to hit .342 across two minor league levels before his season was cut short. The cautious approach of starting him in Low-A this year was to help him regain his form while avoiding rushing his recovery.
Defensively, Honeyman has mainly manned center field this season and has shown reliable skills, not committing an error in over 223 innings. His versatility in the outfield is expected to be an asset as the Cardinals plan to rotate him alongside other top prospects like Zach Levenson, giving him exposure to different positions and game situations.
Honeyman’s High-A debut was promising, as he recorded his first hit in his initial game at the level. Unfortunately, he left the very next game early after experiencing a calf injury. The severity of the injury remains uncertain, but he remains an important prospect for the Cardinals’ future. His return to Peoria will be closely monitored as the organization continues to invest in his development.
