Vikings Coach Provides Update on Injured Guard Will Fries
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell shared an update regarding starting guard Will Fries, who has been dealing with a tibia injury sustained last season. The team recently signed Fries to a five-year contract worth $87.72 million.
O’Connell explained that while Fries hasn’t participated in team practices yet, his rehabilitation is progressing well. “We’re being careful with his recovery process,” the coach stated. “He’s showing great strength in workouts, and we expect him to be ready for training camp, though he may not participate fully this spring.”
The 6’5″ offensive lineman suffered the injury during Week 5 of the previous season while playing for Indianapolis. With 31 career starts over four seasons, Fries is expected to play a key role in protecting second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
O’Connell emphasized that missing spring practices isn’t a major concern due to NFL restrictions on contact during offseason workouts. “This period is primarily for learning and installation,” he noted. “The real competition begins when training camp opens.”
Fries will have the advantage of playing alongside former Colts teammate Ryan Kelly, now the Vikings’ center. The two developed strong chemistry during their time together in Indianapolis, which should help ease Fries’ transition to Minnesota’s offensive line.
The Vikings are counting on Fries to bolster their protection for McCarthy, who is recovering from his own offseason surgery. The team’s investment in Fries demonstrates their commitment to building a strong offensive front for their young quarterback.
