Steelers Bring in New Coaching Support for OTAs
The Pittsburgh Steelers have welcomed a new coach to assist during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this offseason. Derrick Mason, who serves as the assistant defensive backs coach at Johns Hopkins University, announced on social media that he began working with the team this week.
Mason is expected to support the defensive backs unit, likely working alongside primary defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander. With assistant coach Anthony Midget primarily handling the safeties, Mason may focus his efforts on coaching nickel cornerbacks.
This addition is not believed to be a permanent hire but rather a developmental opportunity for Mason to gain NFL experience during the offseason. His exact duration with the team is unclear, but it could last through the preseason.
Before joining the collegiate ranks, Mason spent five years coaching at the high school level, including stints at Glen Burnie, North County, Chesapeake, and Meade high schools. He also has a background in education.
Under Mason’s coaching in 2024, Johns Hopkins had a dominant season, capturing the Centennial Conference championship with a 12-1 record.
