Steelers Fans Have Every Right to Expect Yahya Black to Start at Nose Tackle
The Pittsburgh Steelers have maintained one of the NFL’s top defenses over the past several seasons, yet their playoff performances have repeatedly fallen short—especially when it comes to stopping the run. In their last five postseason losses, the Steelers gave up an average of 175 rushing yards per game, including an alarming 299-yard effort surrendered to the Baltimore Ravens in their most recent playoff exit.
General Manager Omar Khan appeared to recognize this issue and addressed it during the offseason. While the team added Oregon’s Brandon Dorlus to bolster the defensive front, the fifth-round selection of Yahya Black from Iowa could prove to be the most impactful move. Though veterans like Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton sit above others on the depth chart, Black offers a much-needed physical presence in the middle.
Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 352 pounds, Black fits the mold of a true nose tackle—something the Steelers have lacked for years. His sheer size and strength make him a natural anchor for the interior line, unlike previous fill-ins such as Montravius Adams or the misused Keeanu Benton. This role is crucial for tightening the Steelers’ run defense, particularly in high-stakes playoff scenarios.
Despite his potential, head coach Mike Tomlin is known for gradually easing rookies into larger roles. However, this cautious approach could cost the team if the defense again struggles against dominant rushing attacks. Black’s skill set is exactly what the Steelers need, and limiting his early playing time could prove costly.
While nose tackle may not be a full-time position, fans should expect Black to handle the majority of snaps at the spot. With Pittsburgh aiming for a deep playoff run, the decision to start Black or not could be the difference between another early exit or finally solving their long-standing run defense woes.
