The Buffalo Bills have not ruled out the possibility of re-signing veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper for the 2025 season. However, reports suggest another team could step in before that happens. Cooper, who joined Buffalo midway through last season, had a mixed showing—flashing his big-play potential at times but struggling with consistency.
Though Cooper is now a free agent, Bills general manager Brandon Beane has said the team remains open to a reunion. Still, Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn believes the San Francisco 49ers could be a serious contender to sign him. Cohn argued that Cooper’s experience and skill set would fill a major need for the 49ers, who are hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2024 season.
The 49ers face uncertainty at wide receiver heading into the new season. Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from a significant knee injury, and Demarcus Robinson is dealing with a suspension. Cohn pointed out that none of the current options have proven to be a reliable top target, suggesting that Cooper could step in as a veteran presence and help lead a competitive receiving group.
Still, questions remain about Cooper’s long-term effectiveness. In April, Buffalo News reporter Jay Skurski noted that Cooper hadn’t received much attention on the open market. Skurski speculated that this could reflect concerns around his athleticism and overall durability, which may have declined with age.
Meanwhile, the Bills are continuing to reshape their receiving unit. The team recently signed veterans Joshua Palmer and Elijah Moore, both of whom are expected to play key roles. Head coach Sean McDermott also emphasized the need for second-year receiver Keon Coleman and tight end Dalton Kincaid to take significant steps forward in 2025, making any potential return for Cooper more competitive.
