Former Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur believes that Aaron Rodgers is likely to join the Pittsburgh Steelers. LaFleur, who coached Rodgers from 2019 to 2022, expressed confidence in the Steelers’ front office and suggested that a deal could be finalized before training camp. Despite no direct communication from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin or offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, LaFleur expects Rodgers to make the move, noting the long-standing speculation surrounding the quarterback and the team.
The Steelers currently have three quarterbacks with limited experience and did not prioritize the position in the recent draft, selecting Will Howard in the sixth round. This has caused some concern among fans, especially as the team has struggled to advance beyond the wild-card round in recent playoff appearances. Adding a veteran like Rodgers could be seen as a move to maximize the team’s playoff potential.
LaFleur also spoke about Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has faced ongoing injury issues. Though Alexander was named a second-team All-Pro in 2022, he has only played 34 games over the past four seasons. LaFleur acknowledged Alexander’s talent but noted that his frequent injuries have limited his ability to perform consistently. Discussions about Alexander’s future with the team are ongoing.
Turning to the wide receiver group, LaFleur highlighted the team’s efforts to improve the unit through the draft. The Packers added Matthew Golden from Texas and Savion Williams from TCU. While optimistic about their potential, LaFleur emphasized that the rookies still have a lot to learn before the season starts. He praised their attitude and work ethic since arriving at the facility.
Lastly, LaFleur addressed the decision not to pursue a reunion with wide receiver Davante Adams, who instead signed with the Los Angeles Rams. LaFleur mentioned that the move involved complex considerations and expressed his respect for Adams, acknowledging the player’s strong connection to the coaching staff in Los Angeles, including LaFleur’s brother, Mike.
