Flyers Should Consider Signing Goalie Ivan Prosvetov
The Philadelphia Flyers are in need of depth in goal this offseason, and one potential solution is Ivan Prosvetov, a former Colorado Avalanche goaltender who recently played in Russia’s KHL.
Prosvetov, 26, is expected to end his contract with CSKA Moskva and return to the NHL. While his earlier NHL numbers—an 8-9-2 record and a .881 save percentage—aren’t standout, they came while playing for inconsistent teams like the Arizona Coyotes and Avalanche.
In a 2024 interview, Prosvetov shared that he struggled with Colorado’s coaching staff and the constant changes in the goaltending lineup. He noted a lack of communication and support, saying the coaching philosophy often felt disconnected from his needs.
Despite those challenges, Prosvetov excelled in the KHL, recording a 2.32 goals-against average (GAA), a .920 save percentage, and four shutouts in 38 games. In the playoffs, he remained solid, posting a .918 save percentage.
The Flyers’ current goalie situation is far from stable. Uncertainty surrounds Aleksei Kolosov’s future, while Ivan Fedotov and Sam Ersson have shown inconsistency. The AHL affiliate, Lehigh Valley Phantoms, also lacks reliable depth, with only Parker Gahagen (not on an NHL contract) posting a strong season.
Prosvetov could provide a much-needed safety net, whether as a backup in the NHL or a starter in the AHL. His willingness to play in the minors while awaiting an NHL opportunity could make him a cost-effective and practical option for Philadelphia. The question now is whether the Flyers believe they have better alternatives or if Prosvetov is worth the gamble.
