James Cook’s Future with the Buffalo Bills Remains Uncertain After New Report
As the Buffalo Bills prepare for the 2025 NFL season, expectations are high after last year’s AFC Championship Game appearance, where they fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs. One key storyline heading into the new season is the uncertain future of running back James Cook.
Cook has reportedly been seeking a contract extension, but negotiations with the team have yet to yield an agreement. This impasse has led to speculation about whether he might be traded or leave in free agency after the season.
Although a resolution is still possible, recent analysis has raised further doubts. Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine included Cook among the Bills’ top trade assets in a review of potential offseason moves across the league. Ballentine noted that while Buffalo’s offense remains strong under quarterback Josh Allen, the main concern is whether Cook will receive an extension or possibly hold out.
Cook had an impressive 2024 season, rushing 207 times for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns, with an average of 4.9 yards per carry. He also contributed 258 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 32 catches. Given his productivity, many teams could be interested if he becomes available.
The Bills would likely prefer to retain Cook under reasonable contract terms, but a trade remains a possibility if negotiations stall. If he remains on the roster, Cook is expected to play a significant role in the team’s Super Bowl hopes.
