Detroit Pistons Eye Cam Thomas as Offseason Target
Following their first playoff appearance since 2019, the Detroit Pistons are building momentum with a solid young core. Led by Cade Cunningham, and supported by rising talents like Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey, Ron Holland, and Amen Thompson, the team has established a strong foundation. However, Detroit still lacks a consistent second scoring option.
With guards Dennis Schroder, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Malik Beasley entering free agency, the Pistons may need to look for additional scoring depth. One possible target is Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas.
Thomas, 23, is a restricted free agent, meaning the Nets can match any offer he receives. Brooklyn can also offer him more money and likely a larger role. Still, his scoring ability—24 points per game on 43.8% shooting from the field and 34.9% from beyond the arc—makes him an intriguing option for Detroit.
Given Brooklyn’s current rebuild and limited success in the draft lottery, the most plausible path to acquire Thomas would be via a sign-and-trade. The Pistons could potentially offer Simone Fontecchio or a young guard like Marcus Sasser, along with protected draft picks, to make a deal work.
If the Pistons re-sign both Beasley and Hardaway Jr., however, their cap space and need for Thomas could diminish—especially since Beasley is expected to seek a raise after a strong season.
Though adding Thomas could be financially and logistically challenging due to the Nets’ cap situation, he remains a player to monitor this offseason as Detroit explores ways to elevate its offense.
