Steelers Sign Running Back Trey Sermon to One-Year Deal
The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding veteran running back Trey Sermon to their roster on a one-year contract, according to a report by Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports. Sermon recently participated in the team’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis and made a strong enough impression to earn a spot.
This marks the second consecutive year Pittsburgh has signed a veteran running back following a tryout at rookie minicamp. Last year, the team brought in Jonathan Ward under similar circumstances. Sermon, originally a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft, has had stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and most recently the Indianapolis Colts.
Sermon played for the Colts over the last two seasons. In 2024, he carried the ball 56 times for 159 yards and scored two touchdowns. Steelers fans may remember his solid performance against Pittsburgh in Week 15 of the 2023 season, when he rushed for 88 yards on 17 attempts during a Colts win.
A former Ohio State standout, Sermon brings size and experience to the Steelers’ backfield. At the NFL Combine, he measured just over 6 feet tall and weighed 215 pounds, running a 4.61-second 40-yard dash. His skill set adds depth to a Steelers running back group that’s undergoing changes following the departure of Najee Harris in free agency.
With Harris gone, Pittsburgh drafted Kaleb Johnson in the third round and signed Kenneth Gainwell to join the existing rotation of Jaylen Warren and Cordarrelle Patterson. Sermon now becomes part of a crowded but competitive backfield heading into training camp.
