The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a successful offseason, but one major issue still looms: the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers has remained non-committal about joining the team, Mason Rudolph is signed but isn’t a strong starter, and sixth-round pick Will Howard is still fighting for a roster spot.
Despite fans hoping for Rodgers, he may not be the best fit for the team right now. After trading George Pickens, the Steelers need to reset their offense, which could put them in a better position to find their quarterback next year.
However, the Steelers still need a veteran quarterback to round out the roster, as the team typically carries four quarterbacks into training camp. This is where Tyler Huntley could be the ideal option.
Why Tyler Huntley is the Right Choice
Looking at the free-agent pool, few quarterbacks stand out. Carson Wentz is the best option outside of Rodgers, but he offers little more than what Rudolph already provides. While there are potential upside candidates like Desmond Ridder, adding him wouldn’t make much sense with Skylar Thompson and Howard already competing for the final spot.
Huntley, on the other hand, offers both experience and versatility. With his mobility and ability to make plays in the passing game, he could serve as a unique backup behind Rudolph. He would add a different dimension to the offense and provide the Steelers with an athletic quarterback who could fit into the system they might use in the future.
At a relatively low cost, Huntley could help the Steelers experiment with athletic quarterbacks, which could be useful if they decide to pursue a scrambling quarterback in 2026. While he won’t drastically improve the room, his presence could offer valuable long-term potential as the Steelers continue to develop their offense.
