Pistons GM Trajan Langdon Discusses Offseason Decisions, Free Agents, and Team Development
In the wake of a dramatic turnaround season, Pistons President of Basketball Operations Trajan Langdon spoke about the team’s future during a postseason press conference.
Detroit enjoyed a 30-win improvement from the previous season and made their first playoff appearance in five years, fueled by the emergence of young players, key veteran signings, and new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff. Though they pushed the New York Knicks to six games in the first round, their season came to an end with a sense of promise and potential.
This summer, several veteran contributors—Malik Beasley, Tim Hardaway Jr., Dennis Schröder, and Paul Reed—will hit free agency. Langdon said the organization remains open to re-signing them but acknowledged that their futures depend on mutual interest and market dynamics.
“Maybe some of them won’t return, and maybe others get better offers. It takes agreement from both sides,” Langdon said. “They all played valuable roles and fit well with our roster. We’d welcome them back, but decisions have to align.”
Langdon noted that the team is not looking to disrupt its development path but remains open to exploring trade opportunities to improve around franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham.
“We’ll stay patient, as always. We’ll explore trades that make sense but continue focusing on developing our young core. If those players take steps forward, we’ll naturally improve,” Langdon added.
Notable Takeaways from Langdon’s Press Conference:
- On the Season’s Success:
Langdon praised the team’s growth and acknowledged raised expectations.“It was a hell of a season. Surprising and rewarding. Expectations now shift, but there are more positives than negatives.”
- On Building Continuity:
The team plans to maintain roster and coaching staff consistency heading into next season.“Bringing back the same group with continuity and a clear philosophy will be a major positive.”
- On Ausar Thompson:
Langdon highlighted Thompson’s progress despite health challenges.“Ausar hasn’t had a full offseason due to medical setbacks, so we’re excited to see how he develops with a full summer of training.”
- On Jaden Ivey:
Ivey’s early-season impact and potential rookie extension were discussed.“He was instrumental in our turnaround. I’m eager to see his progress over the summer—he brings versatility and energy.”
- On Jalen Duren:
Langdon credited Duren for noticeable improvement over the second half of the season.“He grew a lot after the first 25 games. He became a different player. We’ll challenge him this summer, and he’s ready for that next level.”
The Pistons head into the offseason with a promising mix of veteran presence, youthful talent, and leadership continuity, positioning themselves to build on this season’s breakthrough.
