Lions Eye Potential Reunion with Za’Darius Smith to Strengthen Pass Rush
The Detroit Lions continue to build a playoff-caliber roster, but one lingering concern remains—finding a reliable pass rusher to line up opposite Aidan Hutchinson. While the team added rookie Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round and brought in Marcus Davenport, the edge position still feels incomplete.
That’s where veteran Za’Darius Smith re-enters the conversation.
After joining the Lions midseason in 2024, Smith delivered solid production despite not making headlines. He stepped up during Hutchinson’s injury absence and finished the season with nine sacks and over 60 quarterback pressures. He also proved dependable, missing only two games in the past three years.
Smith already has experience with Detroit’s defensive system, and with a reduced salary likely, bringing him back could be a smart, cost-effective move. His leadership, consistent play, and strong locker room presence—along with his connection to recently signed wide receiver and nephew Jackson Meeks—make him a strong fit for a return.
For a team with high postseason expectations, Smith provides much-needed depth, flexibility, and veteran stability. Detroit doesn’t need him to be the centerpiece—just a dependable contributor. Given his past performance and familiarity with the organization, re-signing him would be a logical step toward rounding out the defensive front.
