Illinois Adds Transfer Tight End Christian Abney to Strengthen Offense
Illinois football continues to build its 2025 roster through the transfer portal, with the latest addition being tight end Christian Abney. The former Ball State player announced his commitment to the Illini on Friday via social media.
Abney, originally from Zionsville High School in Indiana, entered college as a three-star quarterback recruit but transitioned to tight end at Ball State. Over two seasons, he recorded eight catches for 66 yards and one touchdown.
While Abney isn’t known for flashy receiving numbers, his value lies in his versatility. Standing 6-foot-5, he brings size and strength to Illinois’ offense, particularly in blocking situations and red zone opportunities. In 2024, he logged 413 snaps, primarily as an in-line blocker, and earned a run-blocking grade of 59.8—ranking him 160th out of 451 college tight ends.
Though not a high-volume pass catcher, Abney’s experience and skill set will benefit quarterback Luke Altmyer and the Illini’s run game. His presence is expected to help improve offensive efficiency through better protection and blocking up front.
