More Injury Trouble for Yankees as Jazz Chisholm Awaits MRI
The New York Yankees continue to struggle with a wave of injuries, adding to an already difficult season. Star players like 2023 Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole (out after Tommy John surgery), Giancarlo Stanton (elbow issues), and D.J. Lemahieu (calf strain) have all missed time. Despite this, the Yankees finished April atop the AL East with an 18-13 record, leading the Boston Red Sox by 1.5 games.
Their success has been driven largely by their offense, which averages 5.71 runs per game—second only to the Chicago Cubs and significantly better than division rivals. This firepower was evident Tuesday against the Orioles, when New York launched four home runs in the first five at-bats—marking the second time this season they’ve hit four in the opening inning.
However, that same inning brought more bad news. Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Yankees’ newly acquired second baseman, showed visible discomfort after a swing and was later pulled from the game, despite managing a double. He missed Wednesday’s game and was scheduled for an MRI on Thursday to determine the extent of what was initially described as “right flank discomfort.” It was later confirmed to be an injury to his right oblique muscle.
Chisholm, a 2022 NL All-Star originally signed by the Diamondbacks and later traded to the Marlins, joined the Yankees via trade last year and signed a $5.85 million one-year deal for 2025. While Chisholm claimed he felt fine, Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed caution, saying, “I don’t know about that. We’ll see what we have.”
The team awaits further details on his condition following the MRI results.
