Broncos Captain Clarke Caswell Commits to NCAA Hockey
Swift Current Broncos captain Clarke Caswell is set to join one of the top NCAA hockey programs, reportedly committing to the University of Denver for the upcoming season. This decision means he will forego his remaining two years of WHL eligibility.
Broncos General Manager Chad Leslie confirmed Caswell is considering this new opportunity and will provide more details about the team’s 2025-26 plans after next week’s WHL Drafts.
Caswell, a fifth-round NHL draft pick by the Seattle Kraken, has spent three seasons with Swift Current, tallying 191 points in 199 games. He recorded 84 points in 65 games this past season.
This move follows a recent NCAA policy change in November that allows players from major junior leagues to transition to U.S. college teams. Caswell joins several former teammates who have taken this path, including:
- Brady Birnie (Bemidji State University)
- Carline Dezainde (University of Connecticut)
- Rylan Gould (Michigan Tech University)
- Reid Dyck (Colgate University)
- Hunter Mayo (Merrimack College)
While the rule change may cost Swift Current a key player, it also played a role in attracting new talent. Iowa prospect Brock Burch mentioned the new eligibility rules influenced his decision to join the WHL.
The WHL’s Penticton Vees Expansion Draft, Prospects Draft, and U.S. Priority Draft will be held next Wednesday and Thursday.
