Steelers Sign BYU Defensive Lineman Blake Mangelson
The Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with BYU defensive lineman Blake Mangelson as an undrafted free agent, according to a report by Jay Drew of Deseret Sports. Mangelson had initially been scheduled to try out for the Minnesota Vikings but opted to join the Steelers instead.
Mangelson spent his entire college career at BYU, where he developed into a reliable presence on the defensive line. His most productive season came in 2024, when he recorded 37 tackles, including six for a loss, two sacks, and an interception.
Known primarily for his ability to defend against the run, Mangelson also showed skill in disrupting passing lanes by batting down balls at the line of scrimmage. At 6-foot-5 and 279 pounds, his size allows for some positional flexibility, potentially fitting both as a traditional 5-technique defensive end or even as a stand-up edge rusher in certain schemes.
During the Big 12 Pro Day, Mangelson posted solid athletic numbers, including a 5.01-second 40-yard dash, 22 bench press reps, a 29.5-inch vertical jump, and a 9-foot-3 broad jump. His 7.56-second three-cone drill and 4.58-second short shuttle indicate good agility for his size.
He becomes the first interior defensive lineman signed by the Steelers following their selection of Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black in the draft. With Mangelson’s addition, Pittsburgh’s roster now stands at 89 players.
