Trump Criticizes NFL Teams for Passing on Shedeur Sanders in First Round
Former President Donald Trump strongly criticized NFL team owners for not selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, calling all 32 owners “stupid.”
Sanders, the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was expected by some analysts to be a first-round pick, with mock drafts often linking him to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 21. However, he was not selected on the draft’s opening night.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote: “What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player and even greater in the NFL. He’s also a smart, streetwise coach. Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES and is all set for greatness. He should be picked IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”

Shedeur Sanders, 23, was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year last season and is ranked as the 30th overall prospect by NBC Sports’ Connor Rogers.
Trump has previously been outspoken about the NFL. In 2017, he stirred controversy by suggesting that players protesting during the national anthem should be fired. His remarks were widely criticized by several team owners.
Earlier this year, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reaffirmed the league’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, stating they were essential to improving the league and attracting top talent, despite prior opposition from Trump-era policies targeting such initiatives.
