The first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is in the books, and while no Illinois players were selected, several familiar names stood out to fans. Many of the top picks were former college opponents of the Illini—and unfortunately, Illinois didn’t fare well against them, finishing with a combined 4-10 record.
One of the top selections, Abdul Carter, now with the New York Giants, had dominant performances for Penn State against Illinois, especially in 2024 with multiple sacks and a forced fumble. Defensive tackle Mason Graham, drafted fifth by the Browns, split his two games against Illinois while playing for Michigan, but was largely held in check.
Michigan’s Colston Loveland, taken tenth overall by the Bears, had strong showings in both his matchups with Illinois, especially in 2024 when he racked up 83 receiving yards. Another Wolverine, Kenneth Grant, now with the Dolphins, was also limited in his two games against Illinois, both of which featured solid defense from the Illini.
Penn State’s Tyler Warren, drafted by the Colts at No. 14, played Illinois three times. He gradually became more involved in each matchup, with his final appearance featuring both receiving and rushing touchdowns. Despite his individual performances, he only went 2-1 against Illinois.
Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, who spent time with both Michigan State and Oregon before being drafted by the Steelers, had productive games in both of his appearances against Illinois. Offensive lineman Josh Conerly Jr., now with Washington, played in Oregon’s decisive 38-9 win over Illinois, where the Ducks’ offense dominated—thanks in part to his work on the line.
