‘Film Junkie’ Tyleik Williams Ready to Make an Impact with Detroit Lions
Tyleik Williams hasn’t worn a Detroit Lions jersey yet, but he already made a memorable impression—accidentally disconnecting from his first press conference while trying to answer a call from his agent. Laughing it off, Williams explained he simply hit the wrong button.
Selected 28th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Ohio State defensive tackle expressed excitement and emotion over joining the Lions, a team he had a strong feeling might draft him after positive pre-draft meetings.
“I had a good connection with the team,” said Williams. “They made it clear I could be a major part of the defense. I’m just feeling a lot right now—happiness, tears, family—it’s overwhelming.”
Williams enters a deep defensive line group in Detroit, joining players like Alim McNeill, D.J. Reader, and Levi Onwuzurike. Lions GM Brad Holmes praised Williams for his football intelligence and potential fit in their defensive system. Williams credits that IQ to his dedication to film study.
“I’m always watching film,” he said. “I try to pick up tendencies and give the defense a heads-up. It helps to know what’s coming instead of guessing.”
At the NFL Combine, Williams met with head coach Dan Campbell and new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, who emphasized building a personal connection as much as football evaluation. During those talks, they discussed pairing Williams with McNeill—an idea he embraced.
“He’s a great player,” Williams said of McNeill. “I’ve watched his film, and I think we’ll work really well together.”
Known for his strength against the run, Williams posted a solid 88.6 run defense grade at Ohio State, though his pass rush numbers were less impressive. He believes that had more to do with the Buckeyes’ system than his own ability.
“We didn’t get to rush as much in that scheme, but I know I can do it,” he said. “I’m going to prove I can be a complete, three-down player. I’m ready to work—simple as that.”
