Late Injury Twist May Impact Steelers’ Draft Strategy
The New Orleans Saints are still uncertain about quarterback Derek Carr’s shoulder injury just ahead of the NFL Draft, which could influence their draft decisions. Initially expected to avoid drafting a quarterback, the Saints might now consider prospects like Shedeur Sanders or Jaxson Dart with the No. 9 pick.
This development could significantly affect the Pittsburgh Steelers’ draft strategy, particularly if they are targeting a quarterback. According to CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala, Dart is not expected to fall past the Saints at ninth overall, and while another team could move up, current reports suggest the Saints may take him.
Carr’s injury, which may require surgery, could sideline him for part or all of the upcoming season. The Saints reportedly anticipated this possibility and began evaluating top quarterback prospects earlier this offseason. Though Carr restructured his contract before free agency, New Orleans could potentially part ways with him after this year. Spencer Rattler, who started six games in 2024, remains the team’s backup for now.
The Steelers have been thoroughly evaluating the quarterback class. Dart visited Pittsburgh in late April, while Tyler Shough of Louisville and Kyle McCord of Syracuse also met with the team in the weeks leading up to the draft.
If quarterbacks like Dart or Sanders are taken earlier than expected, Pittsburgh may need to rethink their draft approach. Meanwhile, they’re still awaiting a decision from veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, with no clear timeline for his response.
