MLB Rumors: Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox Among Top Contenders for Sandy Alcantara Trade
Although it’s still early in the season, speculation surrounding a potential trade for Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara is already heating up. According to ESPN’s David Schoenfield, the teams most likely to pursue a deal include the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Texas Rangers.
Alcantara, a former Cy Young Award winner, is under contract through 2026, with a club option for 2027. Given that the Marlins are in the midst of a rebuild, it’s expected they will explore trading him despite his long-term deal.
Teams like the Yankees and Red Sox are often linked to top-tier players, so their interest isn’t surprising. The Rangers, although a less obvious fit, could use another frontline starter to pair with Jacob deGrom. The Cubs, however, may be the most compelling destination.
Why the Cubs Make Sense
Chicago is currently leading the NL Central with a 14–10 record, but injuries have impacted their rotation—particularly the loss of Justin Steele for the season. While Shota Imanaga has impressed and Matthew Boyd has been solid, the Cubs could take a big step forward by acquiring a top-level starter like Alcantara.
With competition likely to increase as the trade deadline approaches, Chicago may need to put together a strong offer to secure Alcantara. While Schoenfield lists just four teams, other franchises could easily enter the mix if Alcantara officially becomes available.
