Aaron Boone Criticizes Umpires After Controversial Call on Aaron Judge’s Foul Ball
During the New York Yankees’ 4–0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, a controversial moment unfolded in the eighth inning when Aaron Judge hit a deep ball that appeared to be a home run. The umpires, however, ruled it foul on the field, and the decision was upheld after a video review. Yankees manager Aaron Boone was visibly frustrated by the call and didn’t hold back in his postgame remarks, stating, “It was a fair ball… the audacity of the call standing is remarkable. It’s a home run.”
Judge, following the overturned call, struck out on the next pitch. Boone, still agitated, was ejected from the game—presumably over the foul ball ruling rather than the strikeout itself. At the time, the Yankees were leading 3–0, and the disputed call could have extended their lead earlier. However, despite the controversy, the Yankees eventually secured the win, with Austin Wells adding a home run in the ninth and Fernando Cruz closing with a four-out save.
The game also featured a strong performance from starting pitcher Max Fried, who carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. His bid was ended not by a hit on the field, but by a scoring change from an earlier error in the sixth inning that was later ruled a hit. Still, Fried’s performance was praised by teammates, including Aaron Judge.
Despite the missed home run and lost no-hit bid, the Yankees managed to take three out of four games in the series against Tampa Bay, improving their record to 14–8. They now sit atop the American League East, two games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays, as they prepare for a road trip to face the Cleveland Guardians.
The upcoming series in Cleveland will conclude a 13-game stretch without a break for the Yankees. After that, they’ll return to Yankee Stadium for a highly anticipated divisional matchup against the Blue Jays. With momentum on their side, the team hopes to keep their early-season success rolling.
