Jets Pick Up Fifth-Year Options on Key Young Stars
The New York Jets have made a major roster decision, exercising the fifth-year options on three of their standout 2022 first-round draft picks: cornerback Sauce Gardner, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and defensive end Jermaine Johnson.
Led by new general manager Darren Mougey, the Jets were in a strong position entering the offseason with over $50 million in salary cap space. Rather than rushing into long-term extensions, the team opted to secure another year with each player under their rookie contracts.
The financial breakdown of the options is as follows:
- Sauce Gardner: $20.1 million
- Garrett Wilson: $16.8 million
- Jermaine Johnson: $13.4 million
While contract extensions could be on the horizon, this move ensures New York retains its young core for at least one more season. Gardner and Wilson have both expressed interest in staying with the Jets and being part of the team’s rebuild.
Reflecting on the previous season, Gardner acknowledged personal challenges but emphasized his commitment to growth and success with the franchise.
“I definitely want to be a part of the solution when it comes to turning this organization around, getting us to the playoffs and getting to the Super Bowl,” Gardner said. “Now I realize adversity is a gift.”
For the Jets, the future is clearly about building around this talented trio—and locking in their options is the first big step.
