Sean McDermott Supports His Brother’s Team at Union Match vs. Atlanta
Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott made a rare appearance in the soccer world by attending Philadelphia Union’s 3-0 win over Atlanta United at Subaru Park. McDermott was there to support his brother, Tim McDermott, who serves as President of the Union.
The McDermott brothers have deep ties to Philadelphia. Both were born in the city, and Sean began his NFL coaching career with the Philadelphia Eagles. Tim also worked for the Eagles before transitioning to Major League Soccer, where he eventually became Union President in 2019.
Speaking at the event, Sean McDermott expressed his admiration for the atmosphere at Subaru Park and the growth of the league. “We try to come here at least once a year. We watch games on Wednesday, Saturday, and even Sunday nights. The league is growing, it’s exciting to be here,” he said in a video shared by MLS.
He also praised the athleticism of soccer players and drew comparisons between the pressure-based strategies of NFL and MLS teams. “These guys are incredibly fast and athletic. It’s fun to watch, whether in person or on TV. There are a lot of similarities between what they do and what we try to do in football.”
