Virginia Tech to Host Northern Iowa Defensive Line Transfer
The transfer portal is becoming increasingly active, and Virginia Tech is both seeing players depart and bringing in potential additions. Head coach Brent Pry is working to address roster needs this spring after experiencing more turnover than last year.
Both of the team’s quarterbacks missed the spring game—Kyron Drones is recovering from a medical procedure, and Pop Watson is managing a soft tissue injury. Additionally, redshirt freshman quarterback Davi Belfort entered the transfer portal earlier this week.
On defense, the Hokies lost linebacker Jayden McDonald and defensive lineman Jorden McDonald to the portal on Thursday. With Jorden’s departure, the team is now looking to bolster its defensive line.
One possible replacement is Carter Hewitt, a transfer defensive lineman from Northern Iowa. He is scheduled to visit Virginia Tech on Friday. Standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 287 pounds, Hewitt brings experience with 68 career tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.
Virginia Tech is heading into the 2025 season with less experience along the defensive front compared to last year, when several key additions came via the portal and have since moved on to the NFL. With new defensive coordinator Sam Siefkes taking over, adding a veteran presence like Hewitt could be a key move. The Hokies are expected to actively pursue him during his visit.
